An attractive smile depends on the right balance between the teeth and gums. Receding gums can cause your teeth to look too long, and can expose the tooth roots, which look unattractive and are vulnerable to decay. But gums that are too long can also lead to an unattractive smile, what is described as a “gummy” smile. Like receding gums, a gummy smile can be corrected to ensure you have an attractive smile.

Causes of Gummy Smiles
There are many potential causes for gummy smiles, but the three most common are:
- Excess gum tissue
- Short teeth
- High lip line
Your gummy smile may be due to one, two, or three of these causes. Fortunately, these causes are very treatable, either individually or in combination.
Removing Excess Gum Tissue
If your gummy smile is caused by excess gum tissue, a cosmetic gum lift can be used to restore balance to your smile. Excess gum tissue can cover up a lot of your beautiful teeth. Sometimes it covers all your teeth, and sometimes it covers just one or a few of them, creating an uneven gum line that can make your teeth look crooked, even if they’re straight, and make it look as though your teeth are different sizes.
We simply remove excess gum tissue to let your teeth show. We will also make sure that you have an even gum line with uniform scalloping so your teeth look straight and uniform.
In more extreme cases of gummy smile, we might recommend more extensive reshaping of the gums and bony tissue.
Building Up Short Teeth
If we look at your gums and find there isn’t excess gum tissue, the problem might just be that your teeth are naturally short. Porcelain veneers are the best way to build up your teeth. These shells of advanced ceramic fit over the front and top of your teeth can be used to lengthen your teeth so they balance out the gum tissue.
If we need to build up your teeth a lot, or if your teeth are damaged or decayed as well as being short, we might recommend dental crowns that completely surround your teeth and protect them as well.
Dropping Your Lip Line
Your lip line is the place where your lips cross your teeth when you smile. It’s determined by the style of your smile and the position and activity level of your smile muscles. If this is the cause of your gummy smile, plastic surgery can reconfigure the muscles with an invasive surgery. In some cases, the smile muscles can be partially relaxed with Botox injections.
